LONGRIDGE REMODEL
OAKLAND, CALIFORNIA
This project consisted of a kitchen, family room and bathroom remodel on the first floor, a new master suite addition and bathroom remodel on the second floor, and an excavated bonus room on the basement level.
The homeowner's design goals were to create a timeless space, ideal for entertaining, and functional for everyday use. The 1920s home was already beautiful, and this remodel was just to enhance the existing bones of the house, and be the one and only remodel for the owners to stay in this home forever. Opening up the kitchen, creating perfect circulation throughout and to the rest of the house made this an open and lively space that felt inviting to guests and large gatherings. Most importantly this growing family needed a place to be their home hub, that would be outfitted with the best kitchen features and maintain a user friendly comfort and warmth.

The top goals of the overall design were to integrate a modern element in to the traditional house, maximize the functional and perceived space of the kitchen, and create a unique aesthetic. The existing house is a traditional Mediterranean revival style exterior with classic interior trim and moulding. It has large rooms with a lot of windows and light, so it was easy to envision a modern open plan kitchen, but the custom flush inset cabinets and crown moulding tie in the traditional detailing. The kitchen itself was designed to maximize the counter space and cabinet storage. And opening the wall to the family room with its connection to the rear yard and built in wall of millwork, allows for the kitchen to feel light airy and as large as possible. This transitional kitchen deserved more than a neutral palate, and to give it that unique flare the design embraced a contrasting dark countertop, walnut interior cabinets, and a bright blue hand made geometric backsplash tile that livens up the whole space.
